Brokeback Mountain

Brokeback Mountain (2005) is a love story. Plain and simple. It’s directed by Ang Lee whom I feel a special affinity for, him being from Taiwan. But the story he’s telling here is a very moving one, regardeless of the director’s nationality.

First of all let me start by saying that I had a hard time understanding their think accent. So about half the dialogs were lost on me. Even so, I had no problem understanding their feelings, which says a lot about the actors’ performances.

Even though this is a love story between two men, there were many moments that I recognized from personal experience. The first time they see each other after 4 years. I had that moment many times during my relationship with my wife, before we got married. Another moment was their last scene together. They weren’t really mad at each other, they just were frustrated by their situation, and they took it on each other.

Michelle Williams also gave a great performance as Ennis’s wife, especially in the scene where she confronts him about his sexuality. I think that scene got her the Oscar nomination. Ennis is really a manly man, and I can feel his frustration with himself when he realizes what he’s feeling for Jack. I think Jack is more like a real gay, and he acts more like women in that he talks more, and he’s willing to express his feelings more. Ennis is less talkative, acts very cool, but it doesn’t mean that his love is smaller.

The scene at Jack’s parents place is very touching, and you can see that Jack’s father does not approve of him, but his mother is willing to accept him for what he is.

A very touching movie, and worthy of its multiple Oscar nominations. Check it out in theathers, you won’t be disappointed.
