The Princess Bride (1987): A classic fairy tale, with swordplay, giants, an evil prince, a beautiful princess, and yes, some kissing (as read by a kindly grandfather).
For some reason I didn’t remember watching this movie, even though it is in everyone’s nostalgic 80′ movie. So I decided to get it and finally watch it. Well, I remember the grandfather (played by Colombo / Peter Falk) reading the book to his grandson, but for some reason I had no recollection of the story itself.
The actual fairy tale is an adventure/romance not unlike Robin Hood. The star even dies at a certain point. The princess is a little too dumb though. And the Wesley is not charming enough for my tastes.
My favorite character would be Inigo Montoya played by Mandy Patinkin who I got to know in Dead Like Me. He was just so funny in this movie, in a very subtle and subdued way.
There’s not much to say about this story, watching it as an adult I wasn’t too impressed with it. And it appears I did watch it as a kid, but it didn’t impress me then either. I don’t hate it, there are some scenes that are entertaining, like the one where Vizzini had to choose which cup to drink the wine from. Also Billy Crystal has a fun cameo as an unrecognizable Miracle Max.
Overall though, I could have avoided watching this.
