A Fish Called Wanda

10mA Fish Called Wanda (1988): In London, four very different people team up to commit armed robbery, then try to double cross each other for the loot.

I watched this movie as a kid, and I remember laughing really hard. However I didn’t remember much about the plot, so I thought I’d watch it again as well as showing it to my wife.

The plot is very simple, but it’s perfect for bringing us many funny scenes and situations. That’s all a story of this kind needs to do. It’s not supposed to be too complicated that it doesn’t make sense or distract us from the comedy, and it’s not supposed to be so stupid that it doesn’t make sense.

My favorite characters are Otto and Archie. Otto is just a weird guy whom I would usually hate, but Kevin Kline is just so funny I can’t help laughing. John Cleese as the barrister is also funny but in a completely different way. He is so naive and clueless, not to mention an Englishman. They really complement each other.

There is also the character of Ken, who didn’t really work for me by himself (his attempt at killing the old lady felt more like a WB cartoon, only not as funny). However his scenes with the other two comedians were gold. I especially loved when he couldn’t get the hotel name out for Archie. Comedy gold.

I am not a huge fan of Jamie Lee Curtis, but I think she did a good job at being sexy and likable, and she had a good rapport with both Kline and Cleese.

The ending was a bit surprising to me, the fact Archie gets it all at the end was a departure from the pathetic older man in the beginning. I liked that.

This is definitely one of the funniest comedies I’ve seen, it’s sexy but not vulgar, the plot is perfect, the characters are funny and likable.
