Stardust (2007): In a countryside town bordering on a magical land, a young man makes a promise to his beloved that he’ll retrieve a fallen star by venturing into the magical realm.
I loved this movie, I thought the plot was very interesting (thanks to Neil Gaiman), the characters interesting, the performances good. I just felt for this movie, both the romance and the comedy.
Being a fantasy movie, there were many interesting characters, whose paths ran parallel and crossed each other by the end.
I was waiting for DeNiro to come on the screen, but it took a while. At first I didn’t like his performance, I felt it was over the top. Then I realized his true nature, and understood that he was doing that on purpose. I thought his character was hilarious, I laughed at his meeting with Septimus. This character brought a lot of humor to the movie, but it also helped with Tristan’s growth.
I liked Ricky Gervais’s cameo, but he was just being himself.
I thought newcomer Charlie Cox did a great job. His character growth was very well done, even when his appearance changed, you could still see the "old" Tristan, and vice versa before the change. I can see why they needed that change in the movie, but I think it worked.
Michelle Pfeiffer is gorgeous, she played this part with the right amount of seriousness and playfulness. She was both scary and funny. I hope she decides to continue acting, I didn’t realize I missed her performance until this movie.
I like Claire Danes. Don’t know why, she always brings something special to her performances. I think she was perfect for this role. I like that Sienna Miller is more beautiful than Danes, otherwise Tristan should have fallen in love with Yvaine as soon as he saw her. Instead he obviously likes Victoria, but as he spends time with Yvaine he falls for her. I liked their bickering at first, that’s how many relationships start. I liked Danes’ soliloquy in the caravan, I thought it was touching, well written (learn from that Lucas!) and well performed.
I even like Victoria, who in a more cliché story would have been the vain pretty girl who takes advantage of boys and only wants to marry rich men. Instead she does like Tristan, and in the end she even choses him. I agree that I didn’t like how Tristan treated her at the end.
The ghost brothers were hilarious, I’ve laughed at all their appearances.
The end was more of a cliché action scene that is expected from a fantasy/adventure movie, but it didn’t bother me too much. This is a great fairy tale for adults, with plenty of action/adventure, comedy, romance, but also darker and scary scenes.
