The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

I had very high expectations for this movie, and they were somewhat met. At first all scenes are shot from Bauby’s point of view, so we see the people around him trying to make him feel comfortable.

This helps putting us into his place, transferring to us his feeling of being trapped inside his own body. But we also see the way the people around him behave, how they deal with Bauby’s situation. Not only his family and friends, but also the nurses and doctors helping him.

I was fascinated by the therapy he goes through, first of all the method in which he communicates. Since he can only use one eye, the eye blinks are the only way to express himself. We also see how he passes everyday, from the mundane bath they give him, to the meals and etc…

Despite the serious nature of this story, there are plenty of laughs. We hear Bauby’s thoughts throughout the movie, and some of his comments are really funny.

Things can obviously get serious, I was particularly touched by the scene where for the first time he communicates to his therapist that he wants to die. Her reaction to that statement was totally believable.

I really liked this movie, I think it is well worth watching, if not just to learn about what he went through. However I wasn’t totally blown away by it, because there are times in which I was a little bored, things weren’t as interesting. But overall I liked this movie.
