Paris
By John • Jul 2nd, 2008 • Category: Graphic NovelsAfter the disappointment that was Clubbing, I was hoping that Andi Watson’s other GN I bought was better. I am glad to report that I enjoyed Paris much more than Clubbing.
This story is grounded in reality, but it’s not the traditional romance story. This romance involves two girls, but the story doesn’t focus on that fact. This story proceeds like any other romance story, it has the same beats and structure.
The two characters are not lesbians, but their sexual orientation isn’t even mentioned. There is no talk about being experimental, “jumping ship”, or “not knowing what to do”. These girls simply like each other’s company, and their life is meaningless without each other.
This is not a sexual story, in fact they hardly even kiss. This is a romantic story, an impossible romantic story of an American (Juliet) and a British girl (Deborah) meeting in Paris around 1950.
I am not an art lover, at least not the classic arts. But I love the art by Simon Gane. At first it seems to angular for a romance, but it’s clear that he can convey emotions when the scene requires it.
This might not be an original story, but it’s a very entertaining story about love, drama and happiness, no matter the gender of the protagonists. A great read.
