Kung Fu Panda

This was a pleasant surprise for me. It looked like any other kiddy movie to me, movies that I usually don’t enjoy watching. And it was definitely for kids, but it was fun for an adult as well.

The story was a simple one, but the interactions between the different characters really made it fun to watch. Especially when you contrast the funny/dumb Panda with the serious Shifu (which means “master” in Chinese, so when they call him Master Shifu it just irks me to no end).

I thought seeing characters that are supposed to be Chinese speaking English would annoy me (I am picky that way), but them being animals really made it a moot point.

Also the fight scenes are just excellent, I really enjoyed all of them. The ones with Panda are both cool and funny. The escape scene with Tai Lung was one of the best ones. He cleverly uses spears to create an escape route, and he just looks scary.

I also found the back story about Shifu raising Tai Lung very touching. It bugs me a little bit that Tai Lung seemed to change from good to bad over night, though they tried to explain that change through the narration. Still, we just didn’t see how it really happened over time.

The final message was not original or mind blowing, it’s pretty standard in a moral story, but we cannot expect too much from a “kiddie movie”.

Overall this movie really surprised me and I enjoyed it very much. This is a very good family movie.
