X-Files: I want to believe
By John • Sep 20th, 2008 • Category: 2 Stars, Sci-Fi, ThrillerI liked X-Files the show, I actually watched all episodes of that series. I admit there were a lot of problems with it, especially in the latter seasons. But I liked the characters and I was excited to watch it.
The first movie happened during the good years, so I really liked it. I thought it made for a good entertaining movie, but it also complimented the series very well. Of course that whole conspiracy story went down the toilet when it was clear the writers had no idea what to do with it. Which is why I was glad that this new film was not about that.
It’s been a long time since the end of the series, so I was glad to go back to these characters free of the convoluted “continuity”. The result is “meh”. This was a fairly ordinary story, not in the least exciting. I don’t think going with psychic was a good idea for this movie. Something either horror or more sci-fi would have excited me more.
Bringing the characters back after so long, they had to change things up a little bit. Which is why Scully is almost never in the field, and why they needed a substitute for her next to Mulder. But there is no chemistry between Mulder and the new agent, so it really didn’t work for me. Not to mention that they just got rid of her halfway through.
But Mulder and Scully’s relationship also felt weird because they are basically a couple, but instead of acknowledging it openly, the writers felt the need to still keep things mysterious and ambivalent, which did not work at all. The characters should feel closer than ever to each other, but they still have the same dialogs and tones.
Since this movie wasn’t successful at all, I imagine we’ll never see another X-Files movie in the future, which is sad because I like these characters, but this movie just didn’t do them justice.
