Catergories

My Winnipeg

This is a very original piece of filmmaking, and just describing it is a challenge. It’s a documentary by Guy Maddin about his hometown Winnipeg in Canada, but it’s also about his own childhood and his relationship with his mother.

And the style of this documentary is also very original. Guy Maddin himself narrates the film as if he were reciting a poem. The visuals are very abstract, sometimes reconstructing historical events using live actors, other times using animation.

The scenes about his childhood are also played by actors, expect for his mother, she actually played herself, and it’s not a flattering role. She’s portrayed as this very scary mother.

It’s definitely a fresh experience and I applaud Maddin for it. I found it fascinating at times, but I am really not a literary person and am bored by poems and history. But the personal scenes about his childhood were very interesting.
