Vicky Christina Barcelona

After making a few movies in London, Woody Allen moves to Barcelona and creates another fresh and interesting comedy. It’s not a silly comedy, more a dramatic comedy about relationships between four really interesting and passionate characters.

These are artists, so the drama is amplified by their quirky personalities. Rebecca Hall is a discovery of mine. I really thought she was excellent here. Her conflict is clear in her expression and she has great chemistry with Javier Bardem.

Bardem is perfect for his role, I can’t believe how different he looks than his role in No Country for Old Men. He also has great chemistry with Penelope Cruz, they really felt like ex-lovers that know each other so well, but at the same time can’t live together (they are a couple in real life, so it mustn’t have been too hard for them).

The only one I wasn’t too crazy about is Scarlett Johanson. She felt passionless, almost dull. It could have been her character, but I just wasn’t interested in her.

I am glad that Woody Allen has found new inspiration and is creating something worthy of his name.
