Slumdog Millionaire

This seems to be the favorite film for the Oscars and I agree that it’s a very good movie. However I don’t see this in the top 5 movies of the year at all.

I like the structure of the movie, Jamal explains each of his answers on Who Wants to be a Millionaire by narrating events in his life. At first I thought it was too coincidental, that there must be someone tailoring the questions to him, maybe his brother Salim. But that’s not the point of the movie at all.

At the core of the movie is Jamal’s infatuation (I really can’t call it love) for Latika, and his drive to find her. I liked their story when they were kids, especially when they’re taken by Maman. But as they grew older I wasn’t as interested anymore.

I can understand that as a kid he thinks he’s in love with Latika, but once they’re young adults I really didn’t feel they had any connection at all. I felt they should have forgotten about each other and gone on with their lives.

Salim’s ending was predictable, I didn’t really care about it at all. I liked the Indian host of the show, he was fun to watch.

This is a modern fable that takes place in India, so there is a certain freshness to it. I enjoyed it, but I don’t think it’s a great movie at all.
