Top 10 of 2008

Last years’ Top 10 was just about the movies I watched in 2007, but I hadn’t watched all 2007 movies by then. This year I’ve watched many more new movies from 2008, so I’m going to list the top movies released in 2008. But first a mention of 2007 movies I didn’t list last time:

  • Lust, Caution
  • Into the Wild
  • Juno
  • 4 months
  • No Country For Old Men

There are all great movies that I enjoyed a great deal, however none received 5 stars.

Now on to 2008, which for me was a disappointing year, compared to 2007. In 2007 I gave 5 stars to four movies, it was a really exciting year. In 2008 I didn’t give ANY 5 stars. I was really surprised. There were still some good movies, here they are in no particular order:

  • Rachel Getting Married: a really surprising family drama that felt real.
  • Tell No One: the best thriller I’ve seen in years.
  • Man on Wire: surprisingly thrilling documentary.
  • Let the right one in: a vampire movie unlike any other vampire movie.
  • The Curious Case of Benjamin Button: the dilemma at the end really grabbed me.
  • The Wrestler: really moving.
  • Hunger: incredible acting, unrelenting storytelling.
  • Wall-E: what else can I say, except “Pixar”?
  • The Dark Knight: great action and characterization.
  • In Bruges: great dialog and acting.

These are great movies, but they didn’t blow me away personally. I am looking forward to 2009 and some fresh movies that will completely capture my attention and re-invigorate my enthusiasm for cinema.
