I watched this with my wife, and we found it very enjoyable. It definitely has a very particular tone to it that I don’t think I’ve seen before. It’s half comedy, half tragedy, half just plain crazy (I know there are 3 halves, that’s how crazy it is).
There is a clear commentary about the power of the media, something we’ve seen in later movies. There’s also some commentary about Clyde’s impotence, which I don’t think was very common at the time this movie was released. There’s also a commentary about how women were perceived in that period.
But it’s also a lot of fun, funny lines and crazy bank robbing. I can see why they was such a big movie at the time. But the change of tones are so many and so sudden that at times I felt disorientated, not really knowing what was the point.
Still, it’s a great fun movie that even my wife enjoyed. A true classic.
