SPOILERS WARNING!
This volume sees that start of Lono’s “game”. Up until now he’s been a free lancer, and didn’t want to be involved with either Graves or the Trust. But now that Shepherd has passed his torch to Lono, he part of the game.
In The Calm (#59) Lono and Loop are released and they go get Victor, on Graves’ orders. Lono tells Victor that the plan is to kill every Trust family except one. Who is that family? All hints seem to point at the Medici, which means that Graves is actually working for/with Augustus.
The next arc is a series of conversations between key players. Not much is outright revealed, but there are a lot of hints that lead to many questions. Megan brings Mr Branch to Miami, but we never find out why. Burns basically kidnaps Branch, even though they pass the time drinking and talking. He wants Branch to find Echo and the painting. But Branch doesn’t go back to Paris, he sees Dizzy and runs out of the airport. Where is he going?
Augustus, Benito and Megan also discuss their plans and what they think is going on (who is Graves working with? What are the other families doing behind their backs?). The most interesting conversation is probably the one between Augustus and Graves. Lots of hidden meaning behind their words, they seem to be working together (maybe since the beginning?).
Dizzy seems to be the link between Branch and Benito, both seem very infatuated with her. Was this part of Graves’ plan for her? But how would he know they would fall in love with her? That’s hard to predict, even for him.
Amongst all this talk, the B story makes things more action oriented. We finally meet Spain (who was only mentioned back in #20) who comes to Miami from NY and makes a mess. He involves Tino as well as the local boss Bosco. Ironically he was supposed to work with Bosco, but it’s too late and everybody dies.
Issue 64 advances Jack Daw’s story, who’s gone from drug to fight addiction. Actually, he doesn’t even want to fight, he just wants to get punched (reminds me of Fight Club). Graves is still pushing him, trying to help him resolve his inner issues.
Next is where Lono enters the game with both feet. He tortures and kills Fulvio Carlito and his family for Augustus, since he was responsible for the attempted murder of Benito. But Augutus also wants Vasco and Kotias dead, instead Lono convinces him that he should forgive. At the same time Victor and Loop kill Megan, which was a huge shock to me. Who ordered this murder? Was it Graves or Lono? Is Augustus involved?
The volume concludes with an issue about Dizzy. She really seems to be everybody’s obsession. Benito, Branch and maybe Wylie are all after her in Mexico. Wylie and Dizzy seem to be playing at cowboy, the whole issue has a very western feeling.
Lono is now a bigger player, he’s not only taken Shepherd’s place in the Trust, but he also seems to be playing sides, just like Shepherd. But he has Victor and Loop on his side. This is getting really interesting.
