Another series that I’ve always wanted to read is Daredevil. Ever since Quesada started Marvel Knights, this series has been well reviewed. I actually read a few story lines, but I never went beyond 3-4 arcs. So I thought I’d start from issue 1, even though it’s been recently changed to the old numbering.
This first story arc is the one that brought Kevin Smith to prominence, not to mention Quesada/Palmiotti and their Marvel Knights.
This is a very important story for Matt and it’s a typical Daredevil story, where he falls very low, he’s miserable, he loses an important person in his life, only to climb back up and bring to justice the real villain.
The mystery of the villain was well played out, though it’s not a logical choice for a Daredevil villain. Also, his “powers” basically allow for anything to happen to Matt without much of an explanation.
The moral conundrum of what to do with the baby didn’t convince me too much, which is why I welcomed the presence of the drugs. That could explain it better.
I also had no idea about Matt’s mother being there, was she retconned there or was she there all along? It’s just weird that she’s not a bigger presence in his life.
The end of the villain was too much like Kraven’s, which is why Smith actually mentions Kraven in the story itself.
Quesada’s art is just phenomenal. So dynamic, which is essential for Daredevil, and also expressive during dramatic scenes. At times it might be a little too crowded, but it’s fun to stare at it to get all the details.
This was a great beginning for the modern Daredevil series, but it’s just the beginning.
