Daredevil vol2 #20-25: Playing to the Camera

This next arc is written by Bob Gale, with art by Phil Winslade and Dave Ross. This story focuses on Matt’s day job as a lawyer. In fact, not only is Matt working as a lawyer, but he’s helping his client sue Daredevil! That’s a great idea that brings to many interesting situations.

Daredevil hires a lawyer but keeps his identity secret. He’s also trying to find out the truth about what happened, though it’s eluding him until the end. When Daredevil goes to court, Gale plays with the problem of suing a masked person without knowing their real identity. It’s exactly the same thing that happened in a recent Spider-Man story, where he was being sued. In the end there are multiple costumed heroes, and nobody knows which one is real, or maybe they all are.

That part of the trial and all the various legal talk was very interesting. What I didn’t like was how dumb Matt was when he confronted the villain behind all this. He should have been much smarter about it, him being a lawyer. We’ve seen many stories where people secretly bring a recorder with them to entrap their opponents (it happened a lot in Flash) or some other similar trick. Matt is just clueless and is played like a kid.

The art by Winslade and Ross is very good, however it doesn’t live up to the high standards set in the series so far. It just doesn’t feel as modern and “hip”, it has more of a classic feel to it.

I enjoyed this story very much, I think it’s underrated and deserved a bit more attention.
