This movie has popped up in some of the best of 09 lists and I can see why. It’s very well made and presents an aspect of baseball that most people don’t know about. I certainly didn’t, though I’m not a fan of baseball to begin with.
Sugar is a Dominican young man who is chosen to go to US and play baseball. He starts in a minor league, but he’s under a lot of pressure. This is not just a game for him, it’s a way for him to make a living and give money to his family at home. Basically he has nothing else in life, so it is very serious for him.
As expected things don’t go so well, and he decides to leave and try to start a life in New York by himself. Up to this point I liked the story, but once he gets to NY it feels things are going a little too well for him. I’m not saying he’s super successful, but I just felt he didn’t struggle that much.
Maybe I’m just used to very dramatic movies where characters go through hell, which is not very realistic. Sugar instead, might be more realistic.
In the end I did like this movie, it was certainly felt different than many other sports movies.
