Catergories

Nine

I recently watched Glee, and I’ve been pumped about musicals, but watching this movie reminded why I never liked them before. To me this is not a coherent story or character study. To me it’s just a series of musical performances by many different actors that don’t have a common thread, except for being inspired by Fellini.

The music numbers are ok to good, but they didn’t really excite me that much, and I didn’t come away with a tune stuck in my head. The many famous actresses aren’t given much to work with in terms of character, so they seem to be in this movie just for the musical performances.

I understand that just like a Fellini movie, this is not plot-driven, but characterization should be important, and I really didn’t feel that. Daniel Day Lewis is good here, but again he’s not given much.

This is a perfect example of why I don’t like this type of musical.
