This is an atypical war movie, where the soldiers are not actually at war, they instead have an emotionally tough job: notify the family of deceased soldiers.
Foster and Harrelson are great in this movie, they are dealing with lots of emotions and sometimes it’s just too much for them (and for us). Their relationship starts awkward, but soon they become closer, and they understand each other well.
Their conversation towards the end was very powerful, it showed they need to open up, but not a lot of people would understand. Luckily they do understand each other.
I also liked the relationship with the widow, I thought it was handled well. It felt real, at least their emotions about the whole situation and about each other felt real to me. I can’t say I identify with them, but I liked it.
There are many scenes where the family of the dead soldiers react to the news, and their reactions are totally understandable, but it was both hard and interesting to watch. I wonder how I would react in their position.
I also wonder if it’s better not to send soldiers to do these notifications, it’s obvious some people might take it out on them. But if you send somebody who isn’t military, they might not get angry at them.
A very interesting movie that gave me a different perspective on war.
