Jeff Smith created Bone, one of my favorite comics of all time. After he finished Bone, he was convinced by DC to do this little mini-series of Shazam, which could be his first and last mainstream superhero comic.

Captain Marvel seems actually well suited for his style. He gets to do weird monsters and little people (though it’s just Billy, his sister Mary and the bad guy… ok that’s a lot of important people). Add to that the colors, and you’ve got a great looking book.

Story-wise it was fine. I wasn’t crazy about it, but it had some nice twists (who is the “real” bad guy?), some fun action scenes, some funny lines. Not being familiar with the detailed history of this comic, I thought some references were lost on me, and I was a little confused.

But that’s just a minor problem. The bigger problem is that I just didn’t care for these characters. As fun as this story was, I didn’t connect with any character and I am not looking forward to reading more adventures of them.

Still, this is probably a historical book for Jeff Smith’s fans, though once he finishes Rassle he might be convinced to do Howard the Duck or something…
